CAR OWNERSHIP
(Back to Chapter 5 Index)
The last 20 years have seen an increase in car ownership and thus mobility. 68% of households owned at least 1 car in 1971 as opposed to 82% in 1991. Even more significant, however, has been the move towards family mobility in that time. In 1991 43% of households had 2 or more cars as opposed to only 17% in 1971. This reflects national trends but in Sulgrave is exaggerated by the changing structure of the population in those years. The influx of commuter-based families and couples, who by definition must be mobile, has meant a considerable increase in multiple car ownership.
